Hello

My name is Emersen Barnes,

In my work, I aim to capture universal sensory moments that we all experience. I use imagery of
people completely submerged in water, pay homage to the grim dark high fantasy genre of the 1980s, and paint warm, playful portraits of those I hold very dear. Throughout all of my work, I place my love of people and their stories.

A personal piece I made in 2024 titled ‘Morning Shift’ shows a man sleeping on a messy bed, with
the shape of a small dog poking over his belly, looking directly at the viewer. The window on the far
wall cast the first few rays of sunrise through the bedroom. I made this painting when I worked in a
restaurant and had to leave home every morning at 5:30 am. I save acrylic painting for pieces like this because I like muddying my subjects into being a part of the environment.

I often start a painting as a way to explore a struggle I am dealing with, and by isolating that feeling to a single image, I feel like that way, I don’t have to do very much work for people to connect to it.
